History of Brownie Guides
241
A very long time ago (1910) Girls Guides was formed. A man called Robert Baden-Powell had started Scouting for boys. At the activity days he noticed growing numbers of girls joining in, so he set up the Girl Guides and asked his sister Agnes, to keep an eye on them.
When even younger girls started to join in with their older sisters, a new section was started. They were called Rosebuds, and they had to be between 8 & 11 years old. They had a rosebud promise badge which was designed by Agnes.
However, not many of the girls liked that name, so B.P. changed the name to 'Brownies' based on a story written by a Mrs Ewing.
The first Brownies wore dark blue dresses or skirts & shirts. Because their first sixes were named after british trees the rosebud Promise badge was replaced by an acorn.   Then the uniform colour changed to brown ( to go with the 'Brownie' story )
They worked for badges like we do now although they were different then.
Robert Baden-Powell met a lady called Olave Soames in 1912 and they married in October that year.   He was 32 years older than her. Olave became very involved in Scouting and was made Chief Guide in 1918. She was very popular.
They both worked very hard for Scouting & Guiding.

In 1941 Lord Baden-Powell died, He was living in Kenya. Lady Baden-Powell came back to England. She died in 1977.
Many other countries were keen to follow Baden Powells guidelines for Scouting & Guiding. So in 1919 an association was set up with all the countries involved, this was the start of the 'World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts' WAGGGS for short.
In 1920 Baden-Powell writes the first Brownie Handbook. It was called 'Brownies or Bluebirds'
In 1928 WAGGGS is officially set up.
